The Monhegan Artists’ Residency provides studio and living space at two locations on the island. Both residences have internet connections, but no land-line phone access.
Because the residency program is designed to provide uninterrupted time away from daily obligations, no guests (including family members) are allowed to stay during the residency. No smoking is allowed in the living quarters or studios.
Elva’s Old P.O. – Apartment and Studio
Monhegan’s historic post office building is centrally located at the top of Wharf Hill with a large deck overlooking the island meadow. It offers a spacious kitchen and living room on the first floor with bedroom, bath, and studio on the second floor. The apartment and studio share the building with Elva’s Old P.O. gift shop, next door to the Lupine Gallery. The space is used for the June and July residencies.
The Shumaker Studio
This newly renovated cottage is situated across the road from the Trailing Yew Inn near the Monhegan Church. There is a studio/living area in the front, with bedroom, bath, kitchen and deck overlooking one of Monhegan’s prized flower gardens. Over the years, the studio has served the needs of many notable Monhegan artists including Fred Wiley, Don Stone, and Philip Shumaker. The cottage is the site for the fall residency.
