Support MARC
Monhegan Island offers a rich and varied artistic
history that has inspired generations of artists.
In particular, it is a tradition that has meaning
and value to many Maine artists, and it is the mission
of the Monhegan Artists Residency Corporation to
give emerging Maine artists the opportunity to share
directly in this legacy through this opportunity
for creative exploration offered by the five week
residency on the Island. But the days of inexpensive
excursions to Monhegan or renting an abandoned fish
shack for a few dollars a month are long gone.
MARC has an annual operating budget of approximately
$11,000 to support the residency program. The MARC
Board of Directors raises these funds through individual
donations, support from art galleries and museums,
businesses, as well as through special educational
and public events and from grants and foundations.
If this program seems right to you, please support
both the program and the vision with a check. If
you know of a corporation that would like to be associated
with this artists' fellowship program, won't you
please bring it to their attention by Email
them this link.
Make sure that your favorite "Maine emerging
artist" knows of the program. Email
them this link or forward her/his name to board@monheganartistsresidency.org
You can also show your support by buying The
Carina House Residency: A Gift of Monhegan,
a handsome, full-color book published by the
Monhegan Artists Residency Corporation, celebrates
34 artists who have been artists-in-residence
at Carina House on Monhegan Island from 1898-2006,
including some of Maine's most renown artists
like Connie Hayes, Marguerite Robichaux, Terry
Hilt, and Jim Dugan. The book features art
work and text by all 34 artist fellows in an
elegant design consisting of a pair of facing
pages for each artist: on the left, a statement
describing her or his residency experience
on Monhegan with a small image of a work, and
on the right, a full-page reproduction. Though
each artist had a unique experience on Monhegan,
the statements reveal common threads: finding
inspiration from the magnificent island environment;
time to reflect; and the opportunity to try
new techniques and take risks. The artists
confirm that the residency was a powerful catalyst
for furthering their art and careers.
The cost of the book is $24.00 plus $1.75 for shipping.
