The Carina House Residency: A Gift of Monhegan

Published in August 2006 on the occasion of an exhibition at Élan Fine Arts in Rockport, The Carina House Residency: A Gift of Monhegan is a book that celebrates the 34 artists who have been artists-in-residence at Carina House on Monhegan Island over the past 17 years. The handsome, 88-page, full-color book is now available in museum shops and bookstores across Maine and online at this website.

Some of Maine's most renown artists are recipients of the Carina House residency, including Connie Hayes, Marguerite Robichaux, Terry Hilt, and Jim Dugan. The book features art work and text by all 34 Carina House artists in an elegant design consisting of a pair of facing pages for each artist: on the left, a statement describing her or his residency experience on Monhegan with a small image of a work, and on the right, a full-page reproduction. Though each artist had a unique experience on Monhegan, the statements reveal common threads: finding inspiration from the magnificent island environment; time to reflect; and the opportunity to try new techniques and take risks. The artists confirm that the residency was a powerful catalyst for furthering their art and careers.

The book also contains an introduction by art critic and writer, Carl Little, a history of the Monhegan Artists Residency program, and biographies of each artist. Gail Scott and Victoria Woodhull compiled and edited the book.

The Carina House Residency was printed locally by Custom Museum Publishing and Custom Color Press of Rockland, and published by the Monhegan Artists Residency Corporation (MARC). The aim of both the exhibition and book is to raise awareness and build support for this important program and the artists who have and will benefit from five weeks in the Carina House studio. All proceeds from the sale of the book will directly benefit the residency program and help to sustain it for future Maine artists.
