Applying
for the Residency
Deadline for
applications to the Monhegan Artists'
Residency 2008 Program is a postmarked date of
March 28, 2008
About the program:
The schedule for the 2008 Monhegan Artists'
Residency is:
May 31st until Saturday July 5th at the Hitchcock House and
the Black Duck Studio.
There is no requirement to produce
a body of work, although the residency should be
viewed as an outstanding opportunity for artistic
development. The residency is specifically aimed
at artists with limited financial resources who otherwise
could not afford an extended stay on Monhegan. Each
participant will receive a stipend of $500 to cover
food and other basic expenses. Please note that art
materials are not generally available on the island
and necessities tend to be more expensive than on
the mainland.
Eligibility:
The program is available to visual artists only, defined as
anyone engaged in painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture,
new media or photography as may be appropriate to the Monhegan
residency.
Applicants working in a wide variety
of styles and genres—not just the Monhegan tradition
of landscape and genre painting—are invited to apply.
We encourage artists to apply who are
in the process of developing a clear and original
artistic vision.
Artists must be at least 21 years of
age and legal residents of the State of Maine (proof
of residency may be required).
Students enrolled in a degree program
at the time of the residency are not eligible.
Criteria:
An important goal of the program is to enhance
the careers of serious artists who have yet to win
wide recognition for their work.
Quality of work is the primary criterion
for selection.
Other factors include clarity and content
of the artist's statement and appropriate adherence
to the application guidelines.
Rules and Responsibilities
for Residents:
No guests (family or friends) may stay
in the studio or apartment during the residency.
No pets are allowed.
The house and contents must be properly maintained and left
in the same condition as at the beginning of the residency.
Sale of artwork from Monhegan Artists' Residency (including
the studio) is prohibited.
While artists are not expected to produce
a body of work during the residency, they are asked
to provide biographical information and slides or
other images of their work to the Monhegan Museum
after their stay on the island.
Following their residency, artists
are encouraged to stay in touch with MARC. We hope
that artists will provide images of current work
for the Monhegan Artists' Residency website and notify
MARC about new developments in their careers (exhibitions,
awards, commissions, new gallery associations, etc.)
for our Monhegan Artists' Residency news postings.
Upon request, MARC will include a link to websites
of alumni residents at www.monheganartistsresidency.org (please
make sure that information about work and careers
is current).
